Hey. We wanted to pause for a second and tell you something. We love Africa, and the whole project called Mzungu - a backpacking community for the continent - comes from that.

There is a lot more here than discounts, talk nights, and the odd raffle. More, even, than a place for backpackers to share what they learned on the road.

The whole thing is meant to bridge the many cultures of Africa with ours as travelers. To open the continent a little, with real value, and to offer new ways of looking at what happens on a long trip - volunteering, traveling in a way that lasts, and the mark we leave while we are there.

People often ask us, “why do you do this?” Making a continent easier to travel can flatten it into one well-worn trail. We know that risk.

What we want you to know is that this compass sits in front of us in every article we write, every piece we share, and every recommendation we give: know the continent in all its layers, support the people who live there, and point toward backpacking that does right by them. That is why we work on Mzungu.

The community comes from that. So does everything we build for you on the site.

And in a project like this, you are in the picture too. There are a lot of opinions here, and even more good stories from the road. Write to us - a piece, a paragraph, a volunteering place you would send people toward or steer them away from, something on culture, fruit, beer, mountains, a country, a city, a single stop. Anything you feel like sharing.

Help fill the community tip maps as well. That is how we build, together, a store of good intentions for backpacking in Africa.
