Eritrea

Eritrea drops from a high plateau to the Red Sea in remarkably little distance, with every change in altitude shifting the climate, landscape and rhythm. Asmara, above 2,000 metres, is a city of boulevards, cafés, bicycles, cinemas and modernist architecture adapted into African urban life and local identity. A macchiato and small cake can easily become two hours of watching the city move.

The historic road to Massawa plunges through dramatic escarpments toward heat, mosques, coral-built houses and an old port. Offshore, the Dahlak Archipelago offers arid islands, clear water and reefs, but visits require permits, boats and professional arrangements. Inland lie highland villages, monasteries, markets and landscapes shaped by a long history between the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.

Eritrea is not a destination for complete spontaneity. Travel permits may apply outside Asmara, photography of infrastructure and government sites is sensitive, and border areas carry severe warnings. Verify everything close to departure, photograph thoughtfully and make room for varied Eritrean voices—inside the country and across its diaspora—beyond the aesthetics of old buildings.
