Sudan

Sudan is a land of two Niles, Nubian kingdoms, desert pyramids and a rich Red Sea coast. North of Khartoum, Jebel Barkal and the Napatan sites trace the Kingdom of Kush; at Meroë, fields of steep-sided pyramids rise from the sand beside a royal city, while Naqa and Musawwarat es Sufra add temples and other historic centres.

Along the Nile, Nubian villages, farming, markets and hospitality once formed a slow, rewarding overland route. In the east, Suakin holds fragile coral-built architecture, and the Red Sea around Port Sudan, Sanganeb and Dungonab Bay supports reefs, fish, turtles and dugongs.

Since war began in 2023, however, Sudan has faced a humanitarian catastrophe, widespread fighting, displacement and damage to infrastructure and heritage. At the verification date, official advice is against all travel to almost the entire country, while embassies and emergency services are severely limited. This is not a present-day itinerary. The page preserves recognition of cultural and natural depth without replacing reality with desert fantasy.
