Burundi

Burundi is compact, mountainous and intensely green, with Lake Tanganyika pulling the eye west and cultivated hills folding the road again and again. Bujumbura, the economic capital on the lake, offers markets, urban beaches, fish and music; Gitega, the political capital in the centre, brings museums and the tradition of royal drumming closer.

The drums are not a side show. The ritual dance of the royal drum is a living tradition connecting rhythm, movement, instrument-making and community memory. In nature, Kibira protects montane forest and primates, Rusizi meets the lake’s delta, and Karera Falls and tea country add short walks and wet green scenery. Access and local conditions always need checking.

Burundi can be affordable and distances manageable, but transport, borders and politics may be unpredictable. Give it time rather than reducing it to conflict history or a badge of being “untouristed”. Eat mukeke by the lake, learn a Kirundi greeting, choose cultural performances and guides that pay participants fairly, and listen to what Burundians want to say about their present.
