The Central African Republic sits at the continent’s heart, where savannas meet the Congo Basin forest. Bangui spreads along the Ubangi River opposite the Democratic Republic of the Congo, shaped by markets, music and river life; outside the capital, Boali Falls hint at the force of the country’s water and landscape.

In the southwest, Dzanga-Sangha is one of the region’s most important nature areas. Dzanga’s forest clearings attract forest elephants, bongo and other wildlife, while surrounding forests support western lowland gorillas and chimpanzees. The area belongs to the Sangha Trinational conservation complex shared with Cameroon and Congo, where local and Indigenous communities hold essential knowledge and roles.

At the verification date, however, official authorities advise against all travel to almost the entire country and all but essential travel to Bangui. Armed groups, roadblocks, crime and severely limited consular support make even apparently organised routes highly complex. This is not a destination for independent backpacking now. Learn from its conservation work, support credible organisations from afar and wait—without turning risks faced by local communities into travellers’ extreme-adventure fantasy.
