Terms of use
Terms of use
Mzungu is a backpacker community for independent travel in Africa. Using the site means you accept these terms.
The guides, maps, photos and downloads on the site belong to Mzungu or to the person who wrote them. Don’t copy them for publication without permission.
If you post a tip, story or photo, you let us publish, edit and host it on the site and community maps. You can ask us to change or take it down. No ads without permission, no copying other people’s work, and nothing false or harmful.
Visas, health, safety and similar notes are field reports from backpackers - not medical or legal advice. Check them yourselves before you rely on them.
Community discounts are an introduction to a place, not our guarantee. We are not responsible for what a third-party provider does. Tell us if something goes wrong, so the next person knows.
Privacy
Updated August 2026
The team behind Mzungu, which runs mzungu.org, is responsible for personal data on this site. Questions and requests: Contact us.
What we collect
What you send: name, email, phone, messages, tips, journeys, photos, postcards, Boker Africa sign-up, and details to redeem a perk. Nationality and phone stay on the profile only after you choose them on the visa table, a coupon form, or a WhatsApp group request - not from Google sign-in. If you sign in with Google - the name, email and photo Google passes over. This device may keep language, saves and lists. If you allow usage data - we keep which pages were opened, with an anonymous id. We do not collect background location.
Why
To run the site and the community, publish what you asked us to publish, reply to you, send mail you asked for, and improve the site if you allowed usage data. Legal bases: the service you asked for, consent (usage data and content you publish), and a legitimate interest in running the site safely.
Who sees it
Infrastructure that runs the site for us: hosting and database, email, and Google sign-in. When a YouTube film plays - YouTube/Google may receive your network address and their own data. When a map opens - the map provider receives a display request. We do not sell data, and we do not pass it to advertisers.
How long
Account and published content - while they are on the site, or until you ask us to take them down. Messages - while we still need them to help you. Usage data - up to 180 days.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct, delete, limit, object, or get a copy. You can turn off usage data at any time from Site measures in the footer. In the EU or Israel you can also complain to your local privacy authority. In California: we do not sell personal information and we do not share it for sale.
Age
This site is not meant for children under 16.
Processing outside Israel
Some providers may process data outside Israel and Europe. We only use providers who are bound to protect it.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update it here with a date.
