Sierra Leone quickly proves that it is far more than the old headlines attached to its name. Freetown climbs from the ocean into green hills, loud with music, markets, Krio and street food. Museums and heritage sites trace slavery, emancipation and the formation of the Creole community, while Bunce Island preserves a difficult chapter of the Atlantic slave trade.

The Freetown Peninsula is the immediate showstopper: a road curling between forest and beaches such as River Number Two, Tokeh and Bureh, with fishing communities and waves along the way. Tacugama offers a thoughtful introduction to chimpanzee conservation; Tiwai Island and other forest areas add rivers, primates and birds when season, access and local arrangements line up.

Transport is not always quick and heavy rain can rewrite a route, but the social energy more than compensates.
