Somalia has mainland Africa’s longest coastline, a deep maritime tradition, poetry, trade and food linking the Horn with Arabia and the Indian Ocean. Mogadishu developed over centuries as a Somali and Swahili port city; its old quarters, mosques, lighthouse and Lido Beach tell stories of cosmopolitan life, destruction, recovery and a city that never stopped at the headlines.

The coast continues through dunes, rangelands, port towns and under-recognised heritage. The Hobyo landscape stands out for distinctive vegetation and endemic species. In the northwest, Somaliland has operated under a separate de facto administration since 1991 but is not widely recognised internationally as an independent state; status, entry systems and security differ and should be described accurately without erasing the dispute.

At the verification date, official authorities advise against all travel to almost all Somalia and all but essential travel to parts of Somaliland because of terrorism and continuing violence. This is not a setting for independent backpacking or war tourism. The page recognises heritage and beauty without recommending a visit.
