Niger

Niger is Sahel and Sahara on a monumental scale: a broad river in the southwest, trading towns, caravan histories, the Aïr Mountains and the dunes of the Ténéré. Niamey turns around the river, markets and music; Agadez, with its old city and earth-built mosque, linked North Africa, the Sahara and the Sahel for centuries.

North of the city, the Aïr and Ténéré reserves protect a rare mosaic of volcanic massifs, canyons, oases and sand plains. It is one of the continent’s great desert landscapes and also a space of Tuareg communities, history and rock art—not an “empty” patch on a map. In the southwest, the Niger River and W National Park region tell another story of water, savanna and wildlife.

At the verification date, however, official authorities advise against all travel to Niger. Terrorism and kidnapping risks extend to the capital, and leaving Niamey is restricted under local escort rules. This is not a suggestion to cross the desert now. It is a page that respects culture and landscape, holds curiosity for the future and makes clear that real adventure never means ignoring people, security or reality.
