Countries > Gabon
Gabon is a green dream on a serious scale: forest covers most of the country, rivers run through it to the Atlantic, and national parks protect gorillas, chimpanzees, forest elephants and species still being documented. Libreville gives an urban opening of markets, beaches, music and fish, but travel soon becomes a question of trains, boats, dirt roads and arrangements.
Lopé brings forest and savanna together with archaeological evidence of a long human history. Ivindo protects great rivers and waterfalls deep in the forest; at Loango, lagoons, coast and rainforest sit side by side, and under the right conditions wildlife reaches the ocean’s edge. It is spectacular nature, not a theme park: sightings are never guaranteed and human presence should remain quiet and controlled.
Gabon is relatively expensive for backpackers and logistics outside cities need generous margins. It works better as a focused journey than a race between pins: one park, an excellent guide and several days to breathe. Book through recognised conservation bodies and operators, support community livelihoods and never chase close contact with wildlife—distance is part of respect.
