Countries > DR Congo
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is almost a continent in itself: a mighty river, the world’s second-largest rainforest, musical cities, volcanoes, savannas and hundreds of languages and communities. Kinshasa is an engine of rumba, art, markets and motion, facing Brazzaville across one of the world’s great rivers. In the south, Lubumbashi adds mining history, urban culture and a gateway to Katanga.
The country’s protected areas are famous for good reason. Virunga, Kahuzi-Biega and Salonga safeguard mountain and eastern lowland gorillas, okapi, bonobo and rare ecosystems. But beautiful names on a map are not promises of access. In the east, including North and South Kivu, armed conflict, displacement and airport closures have made conditions dangerous and unpredictable; many visits are impossible or irresponsible.
Elsewhere too, distance, roads, ferries and emergency capacity demand professional planning. Never build a “gorilla route” from an old blog or treat war as adventure scenery. Choose any region only with live information, reliable contacts and park confirmation, prioritising communities and staff. Congo deserves immense curiosity—and immense patience.
