Countries > Angola
Angola is huge, colourful and impossible to squeeze into a small itinerary: Atlantic coast, Portuguese-speaking cities, waterfalls, high plateaus and the Namib Desert meet inside one country. Luanda is expensive and intense, powered by its bay, kizomba and semba, markets, art and food connecting African, Portuguese and Brazilian influences.
In the north, M’banza Kongo was the political and spiritual capital of the Kingdom of Kongo and preserves layers of local, Christian and colonial history. In the centre, Kalandula Falls spread with enormous force, while the Pedras Negras de Pungo Andongo rise as giant rock formations. Southward, the Tundavala Gap opens above the Huíla plateau; farther on, Iona National Park enters dunes, arid plains and the northern Namib.
Distances are immense, transport is not always continuous and basic Portuguese changes everything. Angola is not automatically cheap, but slow travel by buses, minivans and local guesthouses is possible with planning. Do not try to cover the country: choose one axis, keep backup days, use a guide for desert terrain and let music, a performance or a plate of moamba stop you along the way.
