Nigeria does nothing on a small scale. Lagos is a megacity of traffic, beaches, markets, art, fashion and Afrobeats—intense, inventive and addictive when you arrive prepared. Abuja offers a more measured pace, but the larger story lies in the vast mosaic of cities, languages, cuisines and traditions across the country.

In the southwest, the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove is a living Yoruba spiritual landscape of forest, shrines and sculpture, not simply a photo stop. Calabar and the southeast bring distinctive food, coastal culture and forest; northern cities such as Kano hold long histories of trade, walls and markets, though access depends heavily on current security. Yankari and the Mambilla Plateau add springs, savanna and mountain scenery—again, only when local conditions allow.

Food and transport can be backpacker-friendly, but distances, congestion and logistics demand time and trusted local help. Do not try to “do Nigeria” in one visit. Choose a region, build reliable connections, eat jollof and suya without starting the wrong argument, and let the country explain itself beyond headlines and stereotypes.
