Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast arrives at full volume. Abidjan spreads around lagoons and bridges, powered by markets, art, crowded maquis and coupé-décalé that refuses to let anyone sit still. It is huge and not always simple, but time reveals neighbourhood personalities, superb food and a creative scene that shapes urban culture across francophone West Africa.

To the east, Grand-Bassam combines beach, the N’zima fishing village and colonial-era architecture that also tells stories of unequal power and the road to independence. Westward lie Assinie and San-Pédro’s coastlines; around Man, waterfalls, trails and sharp green hills change the view again. Taï National Park protects an exceptionally important rainforest, though meaningful access requires planning, guides and time.

For backpackers, Côte d’Ivoire is all productive contrasts: glossy metropolis and muddy road, cocoa country and coast, late-night dancing and forest walking. Basic French helps enormously, as does curiosity about attiéké, alloco and whatever is grilling nearby. Plan around current regional conditions, support local guides and food spots, and do not reduce an entire country to its biggest city.
