Countries > Mauritania
Mauritania is where the Sahara pours into the Atlantic on a scale that is hard to process. Nouakchott spreads across the sand with a kinetic fish market, sweet tea poured from a height and a capital-city rhythm that still feels close to the desert edge. Farther north, Nouadhibou is a port and railway town, gateway to the peninsula and Banc d’Arguin National Park—a world of shallows, islands, birds and fishing communities.
Inland, the Adrar is the classic heart of the route: Terjit oasis, stone plateaus and the ancient ksour of Chinguetti, Ouadane, Tichitt and Oualata. In Chinguetti, mosques and stone houses stand beside family manuscript libraries while moving dunes make the desert’s power visible. The iron-ore train has become traveller legend, but it is a punishing industrial journey, not an attraction to attempt without current checks, equipment and arrangements.
Mauritania suits travellers who love space, silence and serious planning. Outside cities, improvisation has limits: carry water and communications and use experienced drivers or guides with live security information. Respect dress, tea rituals, communities and fragile nature; the desert is vast, but it is also somebody’s home.
