Countries > Eswatini
Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, is compact enough for a short route and varied enough to keep stopping. The Ezulwini Valley links craft markets, Lobamba, walking trails and Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, an accessible place to hike, cycle or ride among antelope without a safari vehicle wrapped around you.
To the west, Malolotja opens highveld, gorges and waterfalls for longer hikes; Sibebe is a vast granite dome with trails and views. In the east, Hlane brings savanna, lions, elephants and rhinos, while Mlawula and Mbuluzi add walking and birdlife. Distances are short, but weather and altitude change quickly between highveld and lowveld.
Swazi culture is living culture, not a permanent tourist performance. Ceremonies such as Umhlanga and Incwala carry social and spiritual meaning, so attend only when public access is appropriate and follow local guidance—never force a camera into the moment. Eswatini is relatively easy to backpack from South Africa or Mozambique, with hostels, kombis and community stays. Buy directly from makers, ask before photographing and give this small destination a generous pace.
