Djibouti

Djibouti feels as if sea, salt, lava and desert were assembled in an open-air geology lab. Lake Assal lies far below sea level, ringed by salt flats and volcanic rock; Lake Abbé brings limestone chimneys, hot springs and silhouettes that barely look terrestrial. Between them run Rift landscapes, Afar communities and a sense that the ground itself is still moving.

The Gulf of Tadjoura adds deep water, reefs, beaches and the white port town of Tadjoura. In season, responsible operators offer whale-shark encounters governed by distance and conservation rules. Djibouti City is a crossroads of languages, ports, military bases, Somali and Afar food and Arab and French influences.

The country is small but neither cheap nor easy to backpack entirely by public transport. Heat becomes extreme for part of the year, water and shade are essential, and remote areas lack signal and nearby support. The best approach is to choose a few experiences, share a vehicle and guide, arrange everything with a reliable local operator and give marine life, salt sites and communities the space they deserve.
