Countries > Comoros
The Comoros are three independent islands between Madagascar and Mozambique, scented with ylang-ylang, black lava and turquoise water. Moroni on Grande Comore (Ngazidja) is a small capital of lanes, mosques and an early market. From here you boat or fly to Anjouan (Nzwani) and Mohéli (Mwali) — close on the map, far in pace.
On Grande Comore you climb Karthala, an active volcano, and drop to black-sand beaches and hillside villages. Anjouan is steeper, with narrow paths and views over reefs. Mohéli has lagoons, seasonal turtles and simple stays by the water. Mayotte sits next door, but it is a separate destination with a different border and status — do not mix the plans.
Comoros rewards anyone who arrives slowly, modestly and with time. Infrastructure is thin, domestic flights shift, and hospitality is stronger than any guidebook. Dress for local space, ask before photographing, drink treated water and leave an extra day for every island hop — the sea decides when you move.
