Countries > Tunisia
Tunisia packs Mediterranean coast, old medinas, Roman ruins and the Sahara into a surprisingly compact route—and seasons everything with harissa. In the capital, Tunis Medina twists between souks, cafés, mosques and workshops; a short ride reaches Carthage and the blue-and-white lanes of Sidi Bou Said. It is an easy opening to love and a difficult one to fit into a single day.
Along the coast come Sousse and Monastir, while El Jem holds a vast Roman amphitheatre. Djerba blends beaches, villages, Jewish and Muslim heritage and a distinctive island settlement pattern. In the south the landscape breaks open around Matmata, fortified ksour, oases and the Sahara’s edge near Douz and Tozeur—territory for shared louages, dates and horizon-stretching sunsets.
Tunisia is relatively friendly to backpacker budgets: distances are manageable, food is affordable and public transport supports a route without a car. Treat it as a living country rather than an “Arabian Nights” set: dress for context, ask before photographing, buy from real craftspeople and verify entry rules for your own passport.
