Countries > Lesotho
Lesotho is a kingdom in the mountains—a country entirely surrounded by South Africa, with all of its territory above 1,000 metres. Maseru is a practical entry point, but roads soon climb toward stone villages, fields, valleys and the Maloti-Drakensberg range. The air thins, weather moves quickly and the landscape begs to be walked.
In the west, Thaba Bosiu is central to Basotho history, while the Kome area adds cave dwellings and falls. Semonkong is a base for Maletsunyane Falls and journeys on foot or Basotho pony. To the north, Katse Dam and mountain roads open broad valleys; in the east, Sani Pass and Sehlabathebe bring cliffs, high grassland, rock art and huge skies. Winter snow is real and mountain passes are not a game.
Lesotho is made for backpackers who enjoy hiking, community stays and rural rhythm. Public transport reaches surprisingly far, although it does not always continue on the clock. Pack layers even in summer, ask before crossing land or photographing, hire horses and guides from local businesses and give every route a spare day—the mountains enjoy rewriting plans.
