Gambia

The Gambia is a country shaped by a river, and travelling here follows the same flow. A narrow ribbon inside Senegal runs from the Atlantic coast toward villages, mangrove wetlands and savanna, with the river serving as road, landscape and gathering place. Around the coast you will find compact Banjul, Serrekunda’s markets, long beaches and plenty of places to try domoda or benachin.

Move upriver and the tempo drops while birds take over the soundtrack. Abuko offers an easy green escape near the urban area; farther east, boat trips reveal fishing communities, monkeys, hippos and sometimes crocodiles. Kunta Kinteh Island and its related sites tell a difficult, layered story of African-European encounters and the Atlantic slave trade—a visit for listening and reflection, not a rushed photo stop.
