Bahir Dar
Third time injera - Bahir Dar
- Independent / backpacking
I dedicated a year to myself, to travel and explore Ethiopia and Northeast India (Seven Sisters). During the year, your tips and many others accompanied me in times of distress, and in times without a source of information. With great appreciation, I wanted to share a few things I learned myself as well. Enjoy reading.
Bahir Dar
A ride of 10 hours more or less on Salam Bus / Sky Bus will take you to Bahir Dar.
A bit of general information: Bahir Dar is located in the northwest of the country and currently holds the status of capital of the Amhara region. The city is located on the shore of Lake Tana, at the source of the Blue Nile. Located 310 km north of the city of Addis Ababa. The Blue Nile Falls are located 30 km south of the city and constitute a main attraction. In the city there is a small daily market, and a large market every weekend.

The two main attractions in the city:
A boat ride on Lake Tana, accompanied by hippos (there really are!). The boat stops at cute islands. There are churches on the islands – each costs 100 Birr entrance fee, I didn't enter any of them but they say the largest among them is worth it.
Blue Nile Falls. A bumpy 1-hour ride will lead you to the starting point of the trail. A student ID (of any kind – even the fake kind) will provide you with a significant discount. A beautiful trek of a few hours, and the bumpy ride will bring you back to the city.

The second time I arrived in the city, I allowed myself to relax by the lake, read a book, get to know local cafes, and tour art centers located here and there. The market is really nice and I spent quite a bit of time there. In the evening you can go out to the Checheho club and dance Eskista (a traditional dance involving mostly shoulder movement).
Accommodation:
I stayed at a place that unfortunately closed down…
Many recommend NGG Hotel – good luck :)
Please note that there is malaria in the city and it is advisable to take preventive pills and apply repellent.
Recommended length of stay – 2-3 days.
